Tdata Migration Overview

Migrating your Tdata (IA6 and AVANT) data to TBX

The legacy T-Data software, developed in the 1990s, does not possess a direct data export functionality. While ongoing efforts explore potential workarounds to achieve this, no consistently reliable solution has been identified to date. The final distribution of the software, designated the "Legacy Disc," will continue to allow access to T-Data files for a period of up to ten years.

Given this limitation, the recommended procedure for transitioning aircraft data involves a sequential, aircraft-by-aircraft approach, (*soon to be released*) as detailed in the TBX tutorial guides available here. The tutorial videos will also help get you familiar with how to use TBX. If you haven't already watched the tutorials, please do so before proceeding. The steps are as follows:

"Aircraft by Aircraft" Transition Process:

  1. TBX Aircraft Profile Creation: Within TBX, establish an aircraft profile using the N-number and subsequently add the relevant engine(s), propeller(s), and appliance(s).
  2. Initial AD Compliance List (TBX): Execute the first Airworthiness Directive (AD) Compliance list within TBX.
  3. T-Data Document Archival (PDF): In the T-Data software, open the files corresponding to the aircraft. Given their historical nature, these documents should be preserved as PDF files using either the "Print" function (utilizing Microsoft Print to PDF if necessary, as with IApproach) or the "Save as" function (Avant offers a direct "Export to PDF" option via the Standard report print preview).
  4. Long-Term Backup: Save these PDF documents to a secure, backed-up location, preferably a cloud-based storage solution, for long-term preservation.
  5. TBX Document Upload: Navigate to the "Documents" tab within the aircraft profile in TBX. Click the "+" icon to upload the saved PDF documents from the T-Data software. More on uploading documents here.
  6. Document Identification: Clearly name, date, and identify each uploaded document to facilitate efficient retrieval.
  7. Manual Data Transfer (AD Compliance): From the archived PDF documents, compliance information pertaining to AD Reports can be copied and pasted into the initial AD Compliance list generated in TBX.
  8. Optional FAA Inspector Approval (Historical Compliance Entry): An optional method, requiring explicit approval from your FAA Inspector, involves entering a Memorandum of Compliance (MOC) stating "Previously complied with on T-Data report dated ##/##/####". While this acknowledges prior work documented in the legacy system, it does not facilitate the forward migration of detailed data and is therefore not the recommended long-term solution. We advise against this approach as a standard practice.
  9. Alternative Data Review Method: As an alternative, users can utilize a PDF reader such as Foxit Reader to view the T-Data PDF files alongside TBX, enabling the direct copying and pasting of compliance information into the TBX fields.

Semi Automated Migration Process:

We have been hard at work to bring a method into fruition that allows for IApproach and Avant compliance reports to import into TBX. We published a tutorial video and instructions on how to complete this process.

Migrating your Tdata IA7 data to TBX:

Our goal is to import the data from IA7 into TBX, this activity is slated for this fall as we are currently working through retiring the much older legacy versions of IApproach and Avant. Please check back for details.
